Leaders get promoted because they were good at being part of a team, getting lots of work done.
The Leader’s job is not to do the work of the whole team, but rather to manage the team to do more, good, work.
The urge to micro-manage is there! The post pandemic management pull to get people back to the office is partly based on wanting them sat where you can see them! You don’t trust them to work out of sight.
Also, as you’re obviously the best at getting lots of work done, you need to look over everyone’s shoulder to make sure they are doing right.
Wrong!
You need to coach, be available to help and have feedback sessions to raise performance.
Treat your people as adults, not children! Removing psychological safety reduces performance.
This is one of the ways that bad leadership ensures performance is at the lowest acceptable level.
Can you name three micro-managing leaders from your past? Keep them to yourself!
