Do many of your employees worry about how they will get their next drink or square meal? In the developed world we take our physical sustenance for granted.
“An army marches on its stomach” is usually attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte. The need to keep the troops fed and watered to maintain a fighting spirit is a long-known fact.
Lord Nelson ate after his sailors. The US Marines feed their Officers after the men. It’s a symbol of servant leadership.
If the people in your organisation can’t be said to “march on their stomachs” then what is it that gives them the fighting spirit, the desire to achieve your corporate objectives?
You may believe there is a simple answer to that, which is “because you pay them”. I’m not going to talk about that today so suspend your disbelief and read on.
People want to be part of something important, something that makes a difference, something of which they are proud to be a part.
It is a sweeping statement to talk about 8 billion people as if they are all the same. But I do this, because my experience is that most people want to be involved, given the choice.
Sadly, some people have been so disappointed in their lives they “just want to do my job”.
Let me give you an example:
Cambridge University is organised on a collegiate system.
When you study or work there you belong to a college. When University colleagues meet one another and introduce themselves, they replace their surnames with the name of their College.
So instead of “John Smith” you become “John Kings” for example. They are proud to be involved with their college.
Do your people have that level of involvement with your organisation?
How would your performance be affected if you did?
