Let me be extreme to make a point.
The Executive View
- People work for money
- People do as little as possible for it
- They don’t follow instructions
The Employee’s View
- The Bosses aren’t interested in hearing what is wrong
- I don’t want to be told ‘just do your job’ again. So, I keep things to myself
- It’s best They don’t know what we must do to make it work
An extreme statement I admit. But, sadly, quite true in many larger organizations.
Fortunately, the Executives think, robots and automation will solve the people problem.
Then the robots will do exactly as we want, and everything will be perfect.
That thinking is based on ignorance of what is needed to produce their saleable service or product. The Employees have been told to ‘just do your job’, so they do.
Who will get the blame when the new robotic processes cause customer dissatisfaction?
Not the Executives of course but some poor middle/project manager about be terminated because the culture of the organization enforced only top-down communication.
Isn’t the solution obvious? Enable bottom-up communication before you automate!
You might find that autonomous humans can work much more effectively if you let them.
