People work for people they like, and respect, so go and say hello to them
Note “like and respect” does not always mean “makes me happy”. People are very sensible about what needs to be done to keep an organization effective.
It isn’t always possible to physically visit and meet employees. In that case do some one-to-one communication, by phone or video.
People want to know you made an effort, paid with your time, to talk to them. It recognises their importance to you and therefore, the organization.
The top team needs to reduce the remoteness between themselves and their employees. In very large multi-site organizations, the visit of one of the Board is an exciting occasion. Build on the excitement, make individual connections, and show employees their relevance to you.
The series of meetings must be planned to avoid spending all your time in meetings!
It is sensible to have local, small meetings too, to spread monthly results.
Individual appraisals should be annual at least, with a 6 month follow up. Don’t forget to talk to your people daily!
Add in an annual visit by one of the top executives and an annual online message to explain corporate results and you have a comprehensive package.
Making people feel involved is an investment. Follow all the advice in these briefings and you will benefit from better financial results!
Like it or not, as a senior person in the organization you are in show business. You had better learn the art of public speaking!
